    Ammo question EDIT

So what is the difference between .223 and 5.56? will they interchange regardless what the weapon was chambered for?

IIRC .308 winchester isloaded to a higher pressure than 7.62 nato.
I did some reading on one of the collector rifle web pages about it.

    Re: Ammo question

According to wikipedia, .308 has a max pressure of 62,000 PSI. 7.62 nato has a max pressure of 60,400 PSI.

My Speer reloading manual gives the maximum SAAMI pressure of .308 Win. as 52,000 CUP.

    Here is some information.

    CUP versus PSI.

I like your style hombre, but this is no laughing matter. Assault on a police officer. Theft of police property. Illegal possession of a firearm. FIVE counts of attempted murder. That comes to... 29 dollars and 40 cents. Cash, cheque or credit card?

    Re: Ammo question

The outside dimensions of the cartridges are the same. The difference is on the inside of the case. Military cases are thicker walled. The reason why the cases are thicker is because of the rifles chamber, .308 & 7.62NATO have different head spaces.

.308 head space is GO 1.630; NO GO 1.634: Field gauge 1.638
7.62NATO head space is GO 1.634; NO GO 1.640; Field gauge 1.6455

The reason why military cases are thicker walled is because of the longer head space to allow for dirt, mud, you name it and the rifle still needs to function. Fired cases stretches and military brass are thicker to allow for the stretch and not rupture.

IF you have a bolt action rifle you can fire both rounds in to it, but beware when firing 7.62 ammo in 308 chamber rifle it is a bit hotter. That goes the same in the 5.56 vs 223. If you have a semi auto rifle then fire only the specified ammo for it.

    Re: Ammo question EDIT

basically 5.56 is higher pressure than .223 - so for general safety reasons you can shoot .223 in a 5.56 chambered rifle but not the other way around.
