Re: SGN Tiered Subscription membership info thread

What many people dont realize and fail to take into consideration are the costs of running, operating, and owning this site. Since the changeover in May this year, membership ha increased over 3000 people. That is a lot of additional users, a lot of bandwidth, a lot of everything. The site has operating costs, I am sure Norm has to pay for vbulletin or something. The donate button is there and there are advertisements, but without getting into fiancials, this site would collapse because users wouldnt pony up and add to the donation plate. Customer base or not, if nobody donated to the site at all, then there wouldnnt be a customer base to begin with. How much longer can the site grow without anyone paying for it? Just pay the $6, skip a big mac in the nextt 90 days, and be done with it. Even someone who wants to sell an item here can get $6 through the sle of their gun. This is one of the larger gun forums, the alternatives, gunbroker, which is gonna cost more than $6, Northwest Firearms, but they have uber restrictive rules, so good luck with that, WGO, great site but must smaller. Nobody is forcing you to pay the $6, nobody will be offended if you dont want to pay the $6, but geez, is it worth complaining about?

In all honesty I wouldn't have joined a year ago if I couldn't see the classifieds! If someone see a piece they cant live without they will join and when the realize the value of the site they will stay and pay!
So standard should be look only - no PM. The adds should be the enticement for people to join.
Gold should be as it is now
Platinum should be whatever Norm want to provide to the "Special" members.
Just my suggestion but I believe the paying members wont lose any value as long as potential buyers see what they have for sale.

Yes it will weed out some of the members who sell something then leave, or plague the site with arguments without ever actually buying or selling something. It will also weed out a lot of potential buyers who for whatever reason do not want to pay to have the option to buy a gun through a private party. Any seller on here should be against this new cost because it will seriously limit their spectrum of buyers. Lets not fool ourselves into thinking that every new member is a felon, criminal ect... It will also probably weed out that naive seller who posts his gun or something passed down to him for sale at a steal price. The ones we see here on SGN that are bought literally minutes after they are posted. It has already been stated and I also agree that this will create a "boys club" of limited members. How many times can you pass that same gun around the new limited pool?

What keeps SGN new, evolving and the market continually moving and growing is the continual influx of new members bringing new WTS's and desires to buy, not the same old member base. This is what is/was great about SGN and what separated it from the rest (apart from the obvious difference that we are buying and selling guns here)

There has been a lot of complaining about the "craiglist" flakes... I'm sorry, I thought that you all were intelligent adults who could/can work a transaction and communicate with potential buyers and figure out that the "buyer" is actually going to meet you. You all have phones, do you not talk on the phone with the buyer the day of or hour before to ensure that you are actually going to meet someone?

I don't see how this new cost is actually going to help SGN apart from what advertisements could not achieve, so from how I understand it anyone will be able to see and post in the discussion section, so you still have the public screwing that up, but they can't view or contact you about your WTS add... how did that help you again, you just severely limited your customer base.

For the FFL dealers, are you enjoying knowing that your customer base was just severely limited because the general public (as I understand it) can't view your WTS adds.

Many other sites have advertisements on the side of the screen, why not employ the use of advertisements to offset costs rather than driving away potential members who could be a future seller or buyer.

I am curious what percent of the members are going to not pay this cost and effectively drop SGN. I will not be paying it. Call me a cheapskate or what you will. So far I see a lot of members commenting on this who are on SGN everyday if not multiple times a day, SGN is arguably equally a social sphere to you than a place to buy and sell guns. You are forgetting that the majority of SGN members are not as dedicated as you, its actually hypocritical because you claim you want to weed out useless members but after this happens how long will it be before you post another thread complaining about how you can't sell your gun/item that would have sold already before the members were cut.

Or, another way of looking at it, how many of you will miss out on buying a item because the potential seller left or chose not to join SGN due to the cost.

Some of you will say good riddance, some of you may understand this thought process. The point is, No one in any successful business would advise you to make a move that will cut your current and future customer base by a significant percentage.
    I completely agree with this.

Also this site does not have ads. The ads could be another option to allow for the current users who don't have the desire to pay for the use of the site.

Also how will this affect group buys like bulldog18 has? Are those going to be restricted now? I wouldn't pay $6 just to buy a few pairs of shooting glasses.

It has been mentioned before, but is the FFL section going to be public or subscription? Is there a full primer on access between all 3 tiers? (free, gold, platinum) I know it has been mentioned in this thread, but it has been general. I am talking specific in terms of a matrix showing which forums are accessible and which aren't.

Re: SGN Tiered Subscription membership info thread

I will jump out and say that im the poster child for the impact this will create.
I have bought a couple weapons from here in the past couple years, made a few calls and inquiries on sale adds, not a whole helluva lot but i have used it AND, spent some time drooling and laughing at hundreds of adds.
Now, i have money in my pocket and im sure i could give up my 20$ a week energy drink addiction to pay a fee but, why? So i can browse and maybe buy a weapon tomorrow or six months from now? Pay for the privilege to browse and drool?
Im not likely to pay right away and one of two things will happen. 1-I'll get bored and less frequent the site and eventually stop coming here all together and buy from a store where i can look and feel on my whim or, 2- Have a bunch of money to spend on another weapon AND THEN pay the union dues to browse for something i may or may not find.
Free market, take it or leave it. Nothing wrong with a fee, and i sincerely feel that way, but the chances of loosing someone like myself in the long term is greater.
I dont get into bashing or crapping, i dont post daily and dont deal with drama. Eventually, this site could very well loose a base membership that did the same and most thats left are the ones that are constantly on here posting. Turns into a limited membersbip boys club and to be in the clique its gonna cost you but, how long will that last?
I will say it again, nothing wrong with a fee. I personally do not feel that it is being done to ensure future and past member retention. How would be right i havent the clue but then again, its not my site to make that decision.

What ^he^ said. I'm in multiple forums and although I'm a rabid enthusiast that has a fairly extensive collection of my own, I don't see myself paying for what I can get for free on other sites.

I'm an occasional browser that has made a purchase or sale here from time to time, but I have other interests/hobbies as well so I just can't see hassling with paying to play here. Most of what I do here is read. When I want to sell there are other outlets.

The new policy will work great for some, but I think you'll see an exodus to other forums. I'd rather see ads in place than see people pay for whats free elsewhere.

As for myself, $6 will be better spent on reloading supplies.

It's been a great 3 years Seattleguns. Thanks!

How many pay to go to a gun show where you can't buy a gun unless you are a member? Plus on this site you don't have to rub up against a 500 lb guy in overalls and a ZZ top beard just to look at a gun. Oh I forgot, it also doesn't smell like ass and gun oil. I don't like people as a rule so I'll pay to shop and shoot the bull on here instead of the gun shows.

If I don't answer your PM, it's probably because I have determined that you are a low-life price gouger that is not worthy of my attention.
