How to get more kids to graduate high school? "eliminate math"

We hold ourselves to such low standards, no wonder we are the laughing stock of the world now.

Is math holding the United States back?

Last week, a community-college student from Harlem, speaking at a meeting of educators and community activists, told a harrowing story about his battle to get a degree. Raised by a single mother in a neighborhood wracked by violence, he had struggled to make it through high school. Then his mother died of cancer, leaving him to raise his three younger siblings alone. He pressed on in school despite new emotional and financial burdens, but there was a remaining obstacle that sometimes seemed like it would overwhelm him: algebra.

Like thousands of would-be college graduates in the United States, he had been forced to enroll in remedial math classes in college, and the difficulty of passing it reduced his chances of reaching graduation. Half of community-college students take remedial classes, and only 10 percent of those who do graduate within three years, Business Week reported in May. And a fifth of four-year college students enroll in remediation, of whom only about a third graduate in six years.

“The root of America’s math problem is the conflation of two goals: improving the absolute performance of American students and closing gaps between high and low performers,” Vigdor writes. “Following the failure of a significant initiative to accomplish both goals simultaneously—the ‘new math’ movement of the mid-twentieth century—successive reforms have focused attention on bringing lower-performing students up to standards. In the process, the standards have been lowered, and the advancement of higher-performing students has been allowed to languish. Designers of the nation’s mathematics curriculum, in short, have fallen into an ‘achievement-gap trap,’ raising the relative performance of average students in part by permitting the absolute performance of the best students to decline.”

unfortunately, our leaders are a product of this educational system and obviously failed math as well...

but sadly, this is the state of our educational system... if the student can't pass the exam, the exam needs to be easier...

no child left behind is at fault here...

and we expect to lead the world in technology? not gonna happen once the current generation of engineers retires....

this is the dumbing down of america... it's sad but it is what will and is currently sinking this ship...

Our high school education system is a joke. Even students in a lot of ass-backwards countries do way better in math than us, because they know that if they don't do well, they'll continue to live an ass-backwards lifestyle in a country with no gov't handouts for the poor.

You know I was raised in a small mountain shack without running water or electricity. Thirty miles from town. Shifting in an outhouse and eating what I killed I went to school got a degree I'm failing to see why everyone is failing

Because you appreciated the value of hardwork to get you out of your past...

The folks of today have it so easy they think school is an inconvenience...

Then they complain that the system is keeping them down and oligarchs are stealing everything from them...

In the effort to make dumb Jimmy feel good about himself, we lower the standard and the pace of our curriculum and held up the advancement of the smart kids. In the end, we produced a bunch of high-self esteem mediocre young adults who won ribbons at every race and got a trophy after a game where they don't keep score. WTF? If you can't do math, then go do something else and be good at whatever you do. Stop with the sob story about how the world owe you sh!t because you can't figure out x^2+Y^2=Z^2

What's with all the arrows and letters? I thought math was only about numbers? You're mixing your math and writing class up.....

(I wonder how many will actually take me seriously in this reply)

For years I had jobs that included hiring entry level and specialist workers. Soon realized that a high school diploma measured only one thing. The capacity to complete a program of long duration. In contrast, the holder of a GED had demonstrated the capacity to read, write and figure. All else being roughly equal, the GED holder got the job.
